About the California Paycheck Calculator
California has a progressive state income tax with rates from 1% to 13.3% — among the highest in the nation. This calculator applies California's actual 2025 tax brackets (not a flat estimated rate) alongside federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare to give you a realistic take-home pay estimate.
California's top rate of 13.3% applies to income over $1,000,000. Most middle-income workers pay an effective California state rate of 4%–8% depending on income and filing status. The calculator uses California's 2025 standard deduction ($5,202 single / $10,404 married) to compute state taxable income before applying brackets.
Note: This calculator does not include California SDI (State Disability Insurance, approximately 1.1% in 2025) or the 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income over $1 million. Results are estimates — actual withholding depends on your DE-4 form elections and pre-tax deductions.
